Floating Marine Debris in the Portuguese Continental Offshore Waters

Floating Marine Debris in the Portuguese Continental Offshore Waters

Within the LIFE+ MarPro project, it was already possible to perform the first quantitative survey of floating marine debris and vessels in the Portuguese Continental Offshore Waters

Floating marine debris (FMD) are present throughout the oceans and may have negative impacts on marine fauna, such as entanglement and ingestion. In the work by Sá (2013) titled "Floating Marine Debris in the Portuguese Continental Offshore Waters", 35 types of debris were identified along 13 transects, as well as some areas of spatial overlap between floating debris, cetaceans and vessels. The data was collected during the summer of 2011, aboard the sailing vessel Santa Maria Manuela within the LIFE+ MarPro Project. The use of line-transect sampling allowed obtaining estimates of abundance, density and spatial distribution of FMD and vessels along the study area. The results and information obtained in this study are important to the conservation of marine protected species in Mainland Portugal, while contributing to assessing the effectiveness of management strategies, legislation and other activities designed to prevent and mitigate this type of pollution.
