Release of a Leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) at Figueira da Foz

Today, April the 10th, 2012, a sea turtle, species Dermochelys coriacea, was returned to its environment. Its rehabilitation was done at the Marine Mammal Recovery Centre of Quiaios(CramQ), Portuguese Wildlife Society (SPVS) in cooperation with the Firefighter of Figueira da Foz Municipality, Macodal and Centro Litoral OP.
This species is protected under the law and it is classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List for wild animals and Annex IV of EC Habitats Directive, concerning population reduction.

This animal was collected by the CramQ staff for initial analysis and treatment. It was found floating near Nazaré on April 1st, 2012 by a fisherman who towed it to the harbour. "Raimunda" (named after the fisherman who found it) was weak and had several injuries.
During its treatment Raimunda was medicated and fed in order to return it as soon as possible to its natural environment.
Today, was that day. Raimunda was moved to the Figueira da Foz fishing harbour where it was boarded on the trawler "Gaivota do Mondego", which returned back to the sea right after coming from the harvest. This animal was tagged with a microship and ID earrings.

CramQ is nowadays the only Rehabilitation Centre in the Center on Portugal. Several animals are being treated there and some returns have already been programmed. In the current year of 2012 several marine bird were already returned back to its environment.

These actions of marine animal recovery and return are done within the Project MARPRO, co-financed by the  LIFE+ Programme, since 2011, in coordination with the University of Aveiro and several partners such as University of Minho, SPEA, IPMA and ICNF.
